Dear New Fourth Grader,
Welcome to fourth grade! On Monday we start our year together. I am looking forward to a fantastic year of learning with you. This will be my seventh year teaching fourth grade at Brown. I have heard wonderful things about your class and I can’t wait to meet you all.
We’ll be spending time next week settling in and becoming a learning community, but before then I’m going to ask you to do a little homework so that we’re all ready on the first day. Enjoy your weekend, but please prepare the following items for Monday.
1. Please bring a healthy snack and water bottle. We have a long morning (recess starts at 12.40 and lunch is not until 1.10), so we allow a short snack just after specials at noon. Snacks should be easy to eat and not messy or crumbly. Fruit, vegetables, and healthy bars make great snacks. I do not allow chips, candy, or popcorn in the classroom. Water bottles are kept near the sinks EXCEPT that there is a 90 degree rule: if the temperature is expected to be above 90 degrees on any day, water bottles may be kept at your desk.
2. Please bring a favorite book. This can be any book that you recommend. Please be prepared to tell our class why you love the book. One of my favorite books is Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. I also love the book Wonder. Another favorite is Weslandia. That one is a picture book about a boy who has a very creative summer break. I think I’ll read it to you on the first day of school.
3. Please bring a book to read in class. We always have at least 30 minutes to read during the day and I have lots of books in our classroom, but best to be prepared.
4. Please bring an attitude of commitment, curiosity, and caring.
I know it’s going to be a great year! We’ll start right away next Monday, so enjoy the weekend and I’ll see you on the playground at 8.50 on Monday morning. Be excited!
